Letter from the Editor
Hello everyone, thank you for checking out our monthly newsletter. I’m George McFarley III, the new Communications Lead and editor of BPoC’s newsletter. I moved to Denmark in 2008 when there were few voices advocating for DEI.
Now, our voices are being heard in spaces, contributing to new ideas and processes. I’m motivated to keep up the good fight to help pave the way for those still searching for a sense of belonging and to remind those on the long haul that they aren’t alone.
We’ve much work to do. I aim to contribute by using my ‘pen’ to highlight our stories, so that our narratives can be recognized as already being woven into the larger fabric that is life in Denmark. I hope you’ll join me, us, on that journey.
Through our newsletter, we’ll share our reflections and highlights of the previous month’s events. We intend to keep you informed on upcoming events, share with you helpful announcements that keep you “In the know,” and sometimes we’ll feature someone from our community who’s chasing their dreams, or helping others chase theirs.
Your engagement, of course, is welcomed and needed to make this possible. We appreciate your critical input. Please share topics that matter to you and that reflect the small and great achievements of persons of color living in Denmark, while contributing to this wonderful country's growth potential and its DEI practices.
We invite you to read our newsletter for inspiration and motivation. Let it be a reminder to each of us to be more “In the service of others,” a strong message my father instilled into my moral fabric, and now it is the message I humbly share with you, our readers. Happy reading.
Last Month’s ReCap
We’re excited for another season where we and our members grow through learning about health, culture, new ideas, opportunities, and well-being, as we build for a more inclusive career in Denmark. As we grow, we’d love to hear from you, our readers.
Let’s start with a recap of our season start, where we’ve already had several useful events designed to keep you informed about your career, health, and life in Denmark.
Our First Event of the 2025 Season
The Brotherhood for Professionals of Color (BPoC) kicked off the 2025 fall season of events on August 13th with a Career Workshop: Mastering the Danish Job Market at Globalhagen House in Copenhagen.
Leslea (Batchelor) Petersen from English Job Denmark led an interactive workshop on crafting effective CVs and cover letters, as well as building standout LinkedIn profiles for the Danish job market.
She shared tips on CV writing, interview techniques, Danish work culture, and practical job search strategies. If you’re unsure about navigating the Danish job market and would like to discuss Leslea's consultation services further, we encourage you to contact her.
Thank you to all attendees, and special thanks to Andrew Julius Bende, Stine Hofman Eilers, and Civil Connections for hosting us at Globalhagen House.
Tech BBQ 2025
On August 27th and 28th, we attended Tech BBQ 2025, where we enjoyed thought-provoking panels and networking opportunities. This year's theme, ‘Build to Matter: Principles,’ focused on meaning, resources, and solutions.
Our Membership lead, Ismaila, shared his takeaways, stating, “At TechBBQ, I saw that it was meant to foster an environment for collaboration, creating a space of support, inspiration, and shared stories.
I was impressed by the large number of African start-ups. I believe BPoC can leverage this growth in attendance to advance our core message around diversity, inclusion, and men's mental health, as well as work-life balance.
It would be of interest to have follow-up actions, bringing people together around meaningful conversations and initiatives started during the event.”
International Citizen Days
If you’re an international living in or around Copenhagen, you should undoubtedly check out next year's International Citizen Days, and here’s why. It’s a smart start to understanding how to navigate job opportunities, connect with other international and local individuals alike, stay updated on essential documents, and the do’s and don’ts of social and political spheres. The two-day event takes place in September at Øksnehallen, a conference location in the heart of Copenhagen.
The Brotherhood for Professionals of Color hosted a booth this year to bolster membership and promote our DEI efforts. Our efforts and attendance boosted our following to 1000 followers, which is a milestone worth celebrating!
BPoC Monthly Meetup: Understanding Employment Unions – Rights, Negotiations & Protections
During our monthly meet up hosted by IDA Forsikring (Ingeniørforeningen i Danmark) “Understanding Trade Unions - Rights and Protections,” our hosts Juliane Marie Neiiendam, the Chair of IDA Region Copenhagen and Ulrik Romme, Business Developer at IDA, informed and later provided delicious sandwiches to a cozy audience of 40 participants about the Danish trade unions and what rights and resources were available to internationals working in Denmark.
The evening’s agenda covered some crucial topics, from explaining the differences between an A-kasse and a trade Union to work visa requirements and the European Union and its DEI practices:
Trade Unions in Denmark and the Danish Model
What is a-kasse and the Flexicurity Model?
Salary insurance options
Terms of employment and salary negotiation
International professionals working in Denmark
Work visa regulations and legal considerations
EU/EESC – working with DEI
Our takeaways from the event:
There are alternatives to a salary proposal, such as bonus schemes, paid education, additional vacation, and negotiations after the probationary period ends.
Tips and strategies to help you negotiate in your favor, from contracts and salary negotiations, and to have the confidence to ask questions, be persistent, and secure agreements in writing.
International tech professionals leave Denmark due to unclear growth paths, a lack of belonging, visa insecurity, and inflexible public systems.
A special thank you to our hosts, Juliane Marie Neiiendam, Ulrik Romme, and IDA; Stephen Burrell, Joseph Yamoah, Stella Karapetian, and Sondra D., for facilitating such an informative event.
